Members of the Karen ethnic community usually celebrate their new year in the middle of December. Communities in Karen State, around Myanmar and abroad come together to mark the occasion. During the festival, Karen people have an activity called aune bu thount in which they give thanks to the rice nat (spirit) for the rice harvest. They also pray to the nat to ask for another bountiful harvest next year.
Additionally, it is an occasion for all Karen to gather with their families and community in love and unity. In the lead up to the festival, groups of local youths go around the towns and villages singing songs to introduce the festival and remind the locals about the upcoming festivities.
