Chilling at 'Chilling Nest'

In Nyaung Shwe, the number of restaurants is growing rapidly, intensifying levels of competition and innovation.One of the latest restaurants causing a stir is the all-bamboo structure, the Sinyaw 2 Restaurant and Chilling Nest, known for its good food, great atmosphere, and cooking classes.The restaurant and upstairs lounge opened last September, and is located on Kyaung Taw Shae Street, Nyaung Shwe. It is not far from the downtown area, but remains secluded from the hustle and bustle. Serving traditional Shan and Inle food, the place has become famous for its grilled fish and pork barbecue.Those signature dishes are cooked over a wood fire, which gives the food a distinct smell that gets mouths watering, said the owner of the restaurant, Ma Sao Ei.

The restaurant has a good selection of drinks and well-made cocktails. Both food and drink prices range from Ks 1500 to 5000.Above the restaurant is a traditional lounge-style room packed with books, pillows and sofas.“The reason I opened the upstairs is so that visitors could take a rest during the day or relax before they take the bus from Nyaung Shwe,” said Ma Sao Ei.Ma Sao Ei added that there’s no WiFi, all the more reason to get stuck into a book or socialize with good company, she said.

Some guests come to play cards and board games upstairs, as if they are relaxing at home, she said.The restaurant’s cooking class has also been drawing people, with many foreigners looking to learn how to cook traditional Myanmar cuisine. “Our chef shows visitors how to cook our recipes…step by step. We let them use our wood fire kitchen also,” she said.   Cooking classes are in high demand and need to be booked in advance. The cost of the class is K 3000 per dish, added to the price of the dish, and students can enjoy their creations afterwards. So, if you have a plan to visit to Inle Lake, don’t forget to chill at that chilling nest and eat some good food too.
