Spirit Worship In Myanmar: The Nat Pantheon

|special features
Jan 2016

They were once humans who died violently and, unable to forget their lamentable fates, are still caught in a limbo between life cycles. They serve the purpose of granting favours to their worshippers, who ask for help through mediums, with a promise of a ceremony for the Nat when the favour has been granted. Nat ceremonies must be held for at least three days and up to seven. At the beginning of the ceremony the Nat, beginning with the King of the Celestials, are invited by name one by one and at the end, each one is ‘escorted’back to their realms with music.
