Ministry eyes to expand Kawthaung Airport
Hotels and tourism authorities has recently revealed its desire to expand the airport from Myanmar’s southern part to become the country’s next international airport.
The local newspaper 7 Day reported that the union minister of hotels and tourism discussed the proposal on the expansion of Kawthaung Airport with Tanintharyi Regional Government.
The minister highlighted importance of the airport, which is a gate away to the Mergui Archipelago that has a huge potential to attract tourists.
He also stressed that the airport is needed an expansion to receive direct international flight if the government wants to develop the region.
At the moment, there are three international airports: Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitaw, and the fourth, Hanthawaddy Airport, is under construction.
