Ministry of hotels and tourism has allowed Myanmar Souvenir Entrepreneurs Association
(MSEA) to issue cash vouchers for the tourists to buy gems and other valuable souvenirs, The Myanmar Times reported.
U Than Win, the chairman of the association, said the vouchers will be used for the items under $1,000.
The tourist can present the vouchers at customs departments, international airports and border gateways to claim the legality of goods.
Previously, souvenir entrepreneurs and distributors rent and buy the vouchers from two government ministries and paid them one percent of profit for souvenirs and 10 percent for gems.
The association has not decided what percentage will collect from the cash vouchers from its members but the money will be used for the promotion of the country’s tourism industry.
The association has more than 26,000 members.
