Authorities from hotels and tourism ministry have given warnings to the local guesthouses not to accept foreign visitors if they do not have proper licenses. According to the online magazine Irrawaddy, the ministry would take legal action against the guesthouses that cater to tourists as a hotels and tourism law restricted the guesthouses with municipal permits not to accommodate the foreigners. Although hotels need official licenses from the ministry to operate, the guesthouses can operate their businesses if they have the permission from township authorities or departments. The law stated that municipal guesthouse owners can be punished with up to three years imprisonment, a fine of 50,000 kyat, or both punishments if they violate the law.
