Tourism development committee proposed to collect tax on short-term foreign visitors to increase the country’s fund to boost tourism development.
Local newspaper The Myanmar Times reported that the committee decided to collect one dollar per night from not only the tourists but also the business visitors.
The plan is expected to take about six months to get approval from the ministry of hotels and tourism and a draft law will be drawn to propose to the State Counsellor.
The committee believes that the new tax will support the country’s tourism promotion budget, which is mainly relied on the government funds.
