Shwe Dagon received record-breaking number of visitors

Number of foreign visitors to Shwe Dagon Pagoda last year reached record breaking in seven years, according to 7 Day’s report.

The data from Shwe Dagon Pagoda Trustees Board shows that over 600,000 tourists visited Myanmar’s most famous pilgrimage site in 2016 and it was the highest number in seven years.

The majority of the visitors came from Thailand and Japanese tourists followed second in the foreign visitors list of the pagoda.

Averagely, about 2,000 foreigners visit Shwe Dagon every day and the number of visitors is growing year by year.

The records also indicates that there were over 70,000 foreign visitors in 2008, over 100,000 in 2009, more than 150,000 in 2010, 200,000 in 2011, 250,000 in 2012, 400,000 in 2013 and over 500,000 in 2014 and 2015.
