Mrauk U cultural region in Rakhine State will be submitted to UNESCO in September 2019 to be on the list of World Heritage Sites. Local and foreign experts and local and departmental persons are working in cooperation to submit the proposal according to the Department of Archeology and Museums of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture.
Presently, the tasks of conducting field surveys, collecting inventories, acquiring a geographic information systems (GIS) map and organizing and educating local people in the region are being carried out with technical and equipment assistance from UNESCO, China, and Italy.
“The survey of the history of water utility, GIS data and world heritage standards of Mrauk U area were carried out from May 13 to 15,” said the official.
In the Mrauk U area, tasks are being carried out for the all-round conservation of ancient buildings and artifacts and meetings in regards to submitting the area to be on the list of World Heritage Sites were held as well. It is learnt that China was of assistance in acquiring the GIS map of the area. AICS - the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development - will also provide, from the Italian government, the monetary assistance of €1m for the preservation of the heritage and prosperity and well-being of the local people.
There are 16 working groups performing the tasks for enabling the region to be on the list of World Heritage Sites in the hope that Mrauk U will be on the list by 2021.
