Despite the claim that Myanmar's tourism industry has been much improved, the number of tourists who entered Myanmar in first six months of this year has significantly decreased compared to 2016, according to the data released by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. There were only 2,019,749 tourists visiting Myanmar from January to July 2017 marking a significant drop of 150,000 tourists compared to last year, when 2,169,885 tourists visited in first six months of the year. Most of these tourists visit Myanmar on day trips and they mostly visit popular tourist destinations in Tachileik, Kawthoung, Myaywaddy and other cities near the border.
