Chindwin Thingyan event begins

Chindwin Thingyan event, the most publicised Thingyan Festival event plan in local media, was launched on April 11 on a beach on the Chindwin River in Monywa, Sagaing Division.      

Organized and guided by Sagaing Region Government, the event is taking place for seven days until April 17 and will have five play zones: 1) Myanmar traditional local products of Thanakha, textiles, glazed earthen jars, jade and amber; 2) culture; 3) sand sculpture; 4) river beach for relaxation; and 5) water-throwing area.  

According to an official of the committee organizing the event, safety measures are being taken for the people who will attend the river beach event.


 “There are two parts of the Chindwin Thingyan event. One part is a traditional show of ethic nationalities and the other main event of Thingyan,” said U Kyaw Win Hlaing, joint-secretary of the committee.   At the traditional show are dances performed by ethnic groups of Kadu-Kanan, Shan, Chin, Naga and Kachin living in Sagaing Region, regional products of Thanakha, textiles, glazed earthen jars, jade and amber crafts.  

Eight Myanmar sand sculptors and one Singaporean created a zone of sand sculptures.

The sand sculpture made by the Singaporean artist is 30 foot wide and 20 foot high.    

The authorities have organized this event for the first time in the region with the aim to promote tourism in Sagaing Region. According to the officials concerned, there has been an increase in local traveller arrivals but the foreigner arrivals number has remained the same.
